Aufgewachsen auf dem Land in Suffolk, England, findet sich die natürliche Wildheit und Schönheit seiner Kindheit zwischen Wäldern, Feldern und Flüssen in all seinen Schmuckstücken wieder.
Abgesehen davon, dass nach 30 Jahren immer noch alle Schmuckstücke in England hergestellt werden, verwendet er nur die besten Materialien, wie Sterlingsilber mit fair abgebautem Gold plattiert oder 18 Kt pures Gold.
So klein und fein sind die einzelnen Stücke gefertigt, dass man meinen möchte, Zwerge hätten daran gearbeitet, doch nein, es ist mal wieder nur ein Hinweis von herausragender Qualität. Um die feinen Einzelheiten beim Herstellungsprozess nicht zu verlieren, die beim Formgießen der Replizierung des Originals oft verloren gehen, wird jedes einzelne Stück am Ende handgefertigt.
Seine Inspiration nimmt Alex Monroe von der Natur, der Kunst und Erinnerungen aus seiner Kindheit, sowie seiner Sorge um die Umwelt.
Um ihn und seine Kreationen noch besser zu verstehen, durften wir ihm ein paar Fragen stellen, auf die er uns geantwortet hat, vielen Dank dafür Alex!
Wir haben diesmal die Fragen nicht auf Deutsch übersetzt, da Alex Monroe diese in seinem ganz eigenen Ton beantwortet hat und wir diese persönliche Note nicht verfälschen wollten :).
What music do you listen to when you work?
I’m outnumbered! I used to get away with Radio 4 or Radio 6, but my design team are a bit stuck on Absolute Rock! It’s only very background anyway, we chat a lot and it’s important to hear what people are working on. The workshop has it’s own rhythm!
What would you have become if you had decided against jewelry design?
I wanted to do Fashion and Constructed Textiles. I would definitely have been a rubbish version of Issey Miyake. Or maybe a gardener?
Do you have a favorite design and are there any designs that you regret / no longer find beautiful in retrospect?
I don’t have a favourite design and I don’t regret a single thing. Of course when I look back I can see how maybe my skills weren’t fully developed, or the design might be a bit naive or something, but I’ve never made anything I wasn’t hugely proud of. I wouldn’t do this if I wasn’t completely happy with the results. I think it’s true to say that my energy and enthusiasm is focussed on whatever I’m doing next. But I really love everything I’ve done in the past too!
Your work is characterized by incredible precision. Have there ever been ideas that were too complex to realize?
Always! I’m just working on a piece that is way too complicated. I was just chatting to the casters and I’m always looking for solutions, ways we can get around complexities. It drives everyone mad but I find it fun and anyway... you can’t compromise!
How did you find your style? Or have your ideas always been so delicate and accurate?
I think like anything it is important to plough your own furrow. I don’t feel like I have much control over who I am, so by constant drawing and making you can discover or uncover your style. I can no more change it than I can change who I am. I’m very confused in life and it’s still a journey, but in my creative practice I realised who I was a long time ago and I’m very happy with that.
